San Leandro

I worked at Physics International (PI), San Leandro, CA, from 1965 to 1975, starting out as a keypunch operator.
In the late 1960s during my morning commute on the 81 bus from Oakland to PI I met Jim Copes who was on his way from Oakland to Pacific High School on Marina Blvd, in San Leandro.

Hi Mary,
If you want to post that I am looking for stories, pictures, video about Davis Street Community Center (now Family Resource Center) for our 40th anniversary please do! and join the Davis Street FRC facebook page!
Thanks, Dawn!

More about talking with Jim Copes...  Jim had read about my being elected to the board of directors of the East Oakland Credit Union and saw the photo of the directors in the Post newspaper.   Jim mentioned the article and told me about the group in San Leandro which was trying to get the San Leandro schools integrated.   I started attending the group's meetings and met quite a few dedicated people including Rev. Homer Richardson and Doris and Mel DeSoto, and other parents, students and teachers.

When I met Jim Copes he was the only African-American student at Pacific High School on Marina Blvd.  He was able to enroll at that school because he wanted to take some classes which were not available at  Castlemont high school in his neighborhood.
