Relatives, Ancestors, etc.

My father, Albert Bonnell Marshall, met Phil and Frank Ichino when they were in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the great depression.  They continued being friends during most of their lives.

During World War 2, Phil and Frank Ichino were in the US Army.   I remember seeing them in uniform.  Their relatives were sent to Manzanar.

(You may need to log in in order to read this.)   I suspect this is Phil Ichino's wife, Mary.

My mother was friends with Princess Der Ling who lived in Los Angeles.  Both played the harp.

My parents met those friends during the Great Depression, before World War 2.

Around 1949, when I was about 12, my parents sent me to a Girl Scout camp in the mountains in southern California.  I had wondered why I was being sent to this camp when I was already pretty experienced in going camping, even in areas which were not formal campgrounds.   Each of us was assigned to a cot in a cluster within the camp.  Several of us were uncomfortable with the cluster we were assigned to.   So, it turned out that we helped each other to carry our cots over to this one particular cluster which seemed to have friendly girls in it.  We ended up with the 2 Jewish girls, several African-American girls, a couple shy girls (including me), etc.   And, as kids usually do at these camps, when the lights went out were continued to talk.  It was the first time I'd had a chance to just have ordinary conversations with Jewish girls and African-American girls.

Back in the mid and late 1950s when my brother, John Marshall, attended Parkmead School in Walnut Creek, CA, he was friends with Rick Reid.   John and Rick were interested in music, electronics, ham radio, etc.   At the time, Rick's family was the only African-American family in Walnut Creek.  Rick's mother Betty Reid Soskin also has a blog.
