When we were kids, our family stayed at The Geysers, about 75 miles north of San Francisco. It was a fading resort with swimming pools of 3 different temperatures and trails leading to quite a few holes in the ground where there was bubbling hot mud.
When we were in bed the first night I remember my father saying, "They don't turn those things off at night!"

Years later, when I was working at Physics International, one of the physicists had been to The Geysers and had been running down one of the hills. He ran into one of those bubbling hot holes and seriously burned his feet. He was on crutches for a while; very painful.
