The Geysers

When we were kids, our family stayed at The Geysers, about 75 miles north of San Francisco. It was a fading resort with swimming pools of 3 different temperatures and trails leading to quite a few holes in the ground where there was bubbling hot mud.

When we were in bed the first night I remember my father saying, "They don't turn those things off at night!"

Years later, when I was working at Physics International, one of the physicists had been to The Geysers and had been running down one of the hills. He ran into one of those bubbling hot holes and seriously burned his feet. He was on crutches for a while; very painful.

Communication

I've realized that sometimes I have a gift regarding communications. Sometimes I have been able to communicate with people with disabilities whom many people feel they cannot communicate with. I remember when I was in a TASH session in which Sharisa Joy Koch and her father were giving a presentation. Sharisa has autism. People were asking her father questions about Sharisa and even asking him about her opinions. I raised my hand and asked, "Why don't you ask her?" After the presentation, Sharisa walked up to be and we walked around the room. I spoke a little; Sharisa didn't say anything, but I did "get" the communication.

Geography & Travel

This includes cities, states, national parks, bridges, tunnels, trains, boats, ships, etc.
It looks like my brother, John, and I are both interested in trains, etc.

When I ride BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) near San Leandro, I usually watch for that small caboose which is in someone's back yard, near a creek. There is also a water tower near the caboose.

Do you realize we have to cross railroad tracks to get to Marina Village Shopping Center in Alameda? Before Alameda became an island, the first site of the western most part of the Transcontinental Railroad was in Alameda.

February 20, 2010
Just copying notes I recently wrote in a tiny notebook....
. Physics International (PI), San Leandro, CA; I worked there from 1965 to 1975
At PI during the 1960s I was on the Equal Opportunity Committee
. East Oakland Credit Union; I was on the board of directors
After my election, a photo appeared in the Oakland Post
. Jim Copes and I road the 81 bus from Oakland to San Leandro
Jim was on his way to Pacific High School and at the time was the only African-American student. One morning Jim told me about the group in San Leandro which was working on integrating schools in San Leandro. He invited me to a meeting.
. Every week day morning I waiting for the 81 bus on East 14th Street at 73rd Avenue, kitty corner from the Black Panther's office. (I think that building has been torn down.) Harry Robinson, an engineer at PI, had told me he was a member of the Black Panthers.
Later on, my daughter, Lambda, and I attended the birthday celebration for Huey Newton at Oakland Auditorium.
